World Microbiome Day 2026
🦠🌍 World Microbiome Day
Today we celebrate the incredible world of the microbiome 🦠 the trillions of microorganisms living on and within us that play a fundamental role in our health.
🤔 Did you know that around 90–95% of our microbes are found in the gut, especially in the colon? These microbial communities help with digestion, strengthen the gut barrier, support the immune system, and even influence organs beyond the gut, including the brain and skin.
🔬 Research also shows that disturbances in the gut microbiota are associated with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic disorders, autoimmune diseases, depression, and anxiety.
At the ENDOTARGET EU Project, the microbiome is at the centre of our research. We investigate how gut microbes, intestinal permeability, and systemic endotoxemia contribute to chronic inflammation and rheumatic diseases through the gut–joint axis.
💡 Maintaining a healthy microbiome can be supported by:
🥗 A diverse, fibre-rich diet
🏃 Regular exercise
💊 Careful use of antibiotics
🧫 Probiotics and prebiotics
Let’s continue advancing microbiome research and uncovering how our “microbial partners” shape health and disease.
