World Microbiome Day 2025

The human body has more microbes than there are stars in the #milkyway. Incredible, but true!
On World Microbiome Day we celebrate the incredible and complex world of microbiomes.

Did you know:

🔸 100 Trillion symbiotic microbes live in and on every person and make up the human microbiota

🔸 If positioned end to end, your body’s microbes would circle the earth 2.5 times.

🔸You have 1.3x more microbes than human cells

🔸The gut microbiota can weigh up to 2 kg

🔸 95% of our microbiota is located in the gastrointestinal tract

🔸The genes in your microbiome outnumber the genes in our genome by about 150 to one

🔸 >10,000 of different microbial species have been identified in the human body

🔸Each individual has a unique gut microbiota, as personal as a fingerprint

🔸 It is thought that 90% of diseases can be linked in some way back to the gut and health of the microbiome

In the ENDOTARGET EU Project we explore how the gut microbiome contributes to systemic inflammation and the progression of rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and spondyloarthritis. By identifying microbial biomarkers and targeting the gut-joint axis, we aim to transform how we approach inflammation-related conditions.
